Decide between gutter repair and replacement
A loose bracket, blocked outlet or leaking joint may be a contained gutter repair. Repeated overflow, sagging runs, split lengths or several failing joints can justify a broader look at the system. From the ground, note what happens in rain and where water lands; do not climb up to diagnose it yourself. A photograph and a short description of the affected elevation give a guttering company a better starting point than “the gutters leak.” Ask whether the cause is blockage, poor fall, undersized capacity or a damaged run before agreeing to replace everything.
What a complete guttering installation price should include
Compare proposals for the same lengths and materials. uPVC and metal guttering have different appearances and maintenance needs, while the profile must suit the roof and available outlets. Ask for the number of corners, stop ends, joints, brackets and downpipes, plus any access equipment and removal of the old system. Where fascias or soffits are unsound, have that work identified separately so a cheap gutter-only quote does not conceal the roof-edge repair. The price should also explain where each downpipe discharges and how the installer will test the finished run.
Keep roof, gutters and walls working together
Gutters collect water from the roof; downpipes carry it onward. If overflow is close to a chimney, extension, bay or boundary wall, describe that location when requesting gutter replacement. The contractor can then assess the route and any difficult access before quoting. Do not assume a new length of gutter alone will solve a blocked or badly routed downpipe.
